Fabi and Rosi – A Neighborhood Gem May 6, 2012

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find an honest menu around Austin these days – everyone wants on the “local” wagon and not everyone is honest about their sourcing.  More and more, restaurants are using buzzwords like “artisanal” to make the diner believe something is special when its not.  I’ll refrain from this tangent for now, because I want to give this restaurant some love.

Fabi and Rosi, on Hearn Street, just off of Lake Austin Austin Blvd., does a great job of with classic European dishes, using seasonal ingredients, and sourcing some locally.  The menu always has a dish using Richardson Farms’ pork, which Chef/owner Wolfgang picks up personally at the farmer’s market.  He also sources from Strube Ranch, Countryside Farms, Johnson’s Backyard Garden and Farm to Table.   The restaurant was also the recipient of the WSPA Restaurant Award for Sourcing Humanely Raised Products.

The food is delicious.  On a recent visit I had the Gulf Rockfish, which was a special.

Most recently, we tried the Watercress Soup with Apple Cream drizzle, which was amazing.

And I opted for the trout dish, which was not one of their locally sourced options, but was delicious all the same.  It was served over fennel and artichokes.

Last month I attended a Slow Food Dinner at Springdale Farm, wherein Chef Wolfgang prepared European dishes to be paired with a Austrian wines.  This was the schnitzel dish.  Sorry for the poor photo quality, it was dark!

The menu at Fabi and Rosi is very reasonably priced, with entrees ranging from $13.00 to $24.00.   They have a great Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 5:00 to 6:30 with $5.00 to $8.00 started and $2.oo off of beer and wine.  The restaurant, housed in an old craftsman style house, is bathed in black and white, and is very comfortable and also easily accessible to my, less than mobile parents.   The service is attentive and friendly, making the entire dining experience one that I will repeat over and over.

It is so nice to have a place to go for delicious food, great ambience and an honest menu, especially so near my neighborhood, which is very underserved in the restaurant category.

  1. I ate there during the 2012 Austin Restaurant Week and had a FABULOUS meal. I didn’t realize that their regular menu features so much local food. I will check them out again!

    • Yes Marissa, the menu always has lots of locally sourced options, they just don’t make a big deal about advertising that. I’m glad you had a good experience there! Thanks for the comment.
